The 2022/23 season of the Indian Super League (ISL) will kick off on Friday (October 7) with a match between Kerala Blasters Football Club and East Bengal at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kochi. The 9th edition of the competition is a special one as the home and away format will return after a gap of three years.

The last two seasons of the competition took place behind closed doors in Goa due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 2022 final was the only match in the last editions which allowed fans to witness the matches from the stadium. The 2022/23 season will see the ISL return to 100% capacity at the ground.

Hyderabad FC is the defending champions after winning last season’s title with a win over Kerala Blasters in the final. However, Jamshedpur will be India’s representative at the AFC Champions League (ACL) as they won the shield title after finishing top of the league table at the end of the season.

The 2022 season will kick off in October with the league stage set to take place till February 27. All 11 teams will face each other twice across the next five months with a total of 110 matches set to take place in the first round. The playoffs will take place in March 2023. All 11 teams will play their home games at their base venues.

The 2022/23 season will see a new format to the competition with four teams qualifying for the playoffs instead of four. The teams finishing 1st and 2nd in the Group stage will directly qualify for the semi-finals while the four teams will take part in an eliminator with the 3rd and 6th place teams going head-to-head alongside those who finish fourth and fifth respectively. The winners of the two matches will find a new place in the semi-finals.
